This is an

extremely affordable

radio kit

——

assemblable by

nearly anyone,

and most importantly,

affordable to

nearly everyone.

A community-driven project.

Pebble HF is a product created by the Amateur Radio Duo Becky (N4BKY) and Mike (N4FFF) in collaboration with Barbara (WB2CBA), as a way to give back to the hobby. The hardware design is based on Barbaras work, and the firmware was written by Guido (PE1NNZ).

Mike and Becky reached out to me some time earlier to tell me about this project. A few weeks later, they let me know they had prototype boards ready. They asked if Id like to build one and of course, I jumped at the chance.

I was genuinely excited to see this tiny transceiver on my bench and couldnt wait to see what it could do.

One thing I really appreciate about how theyre launching this is their group buymodel. Early supporters will pay more than the final target price ($50), which helps fund initial production and lowers costs for future builders.

I was eager to support this effort and even asked if I could be one of their first early supporters at the prototype stage. If you believe in supporting community-driven, open-source projects, this one is absolutely worth backing your early support directly helps make this project more accessible to everyone down the line.

Building the Kit

As soon as my Pebble HF arrived a few weeks ago, I couldnt wait to start building. The next morning, I made a latte (pro tip: the aroma of latte pairs nicely with solder fumes). I then laid out all the parts on my bench and got to work.

My only advice: take your time. Even though all the components you install are through-hole, the board is densely packed, so be careful not to accidentally touch any pre-installed surface-mount components with the tip of your soldering iron.

All told, I finished the build in about 50 minutes, taking my time on purpose.

This is one of the most interesting and meaningful projects Ive seen introduced to the QRP community in a long time. Mike and Becky, along with Guido and Barbara, have put a lot of thought and effort into creating something that lowers the barrier to entry in a very real way. I suspect demand will be extremely high and they may struggle to keep up, especially during these early group buy phases.

Thank you so much, Becky and Mike, for giving me the chance to build and explore the Pebble HF and for letting me be one of your first early supporters. Its a fantastic idea, and Im truly proud of what youve created here!
